I joined when I got my ticket back in 2000 or so but did not use eQSL much.
I am getting more active and interested in using the system again and I have updated my callsign, new QTH and profile accordingly.
As I understand it if I upgrade to a bronze or silver level of membership it allows me to upload an image of my actual QSL card and a shaded area will appear in the lower portion showing QSO information?

That is correct. I suggest you read and understand all the options in the eQSL design section.
