Want to add my congratulations to Dave/eQSL for the CQ announcement. This is a giant step.
A comment on the LoTW vs. eQSL security issue: it seems to me that the security and validity of an eQSL may be BETTER than with LoTW because if an error is entered into the LoTW system it just disappears in the the netherworld. If you make a typographical or entry error on an LoTW entry you will never get a QSL and you will never know why. With eQSL a card with an error in it pops up with a "receive/reject" option so the sending station can be notified of the error, make a correction, and get a valid QSL. Also, with LoTW, I never get the chance to verify the other stations' QSLs as I do with eQSL when I archive them. I also download the image of every eQSL into a folder where I can view them using Windows "Slideshow"; LoTW only gives you a report (if you can figure out how to get what you want!). I was inactive from 1987 to 2008 and was overjoyed to find eQSL when I became active again in 2008. I am still dismayed by the number of hams who send "no eQSL" (of course a few months down the road I get an eQSL from some of them!!!!). If they are OTs who are not computer savvy then I understand, but what can possibly be easier than submitting logs to eQSL, even if you don't want the eQSLs you can "do it for the other guy". We operate in a new technological world where we use rigs that cost thousands of dollars, computers that could have run GM 20 years ago, antenna farms that are astounding, software for digital modes and logging that are awesome ... and some people want me to send a card "via buro" which takes six months to get sorted on my end, six months to get sorted on the other end, and another six months in transition -- you must be kidding me!!!!!! I've worked 2,700 stations since May of '08 and I got a mailing from the W1 Bureau last week with ONE CARD in it!! They tell me it will be a year or so before I start getting many cards. Sorry. On eQSL I can have my confirmation by the time the QSO is over. What's not to like about that? LoTW is better than "via buro" for sure, but long live eQSL! 73, Reed/WB1ABQ WB1ABQ Reed A. Garfield |

Am I seeing right? Did I just see an ad for eQSL on the ARRL web site? Does this have possibilities or is an ad just an ad ($$) where ARRL is concerned?

Nice to observe all the small (and big) steps towards a global acceptance of eQSL.
Knowing the ARRL standpoint in this matter explains for sure the opinion in certain other ham organisations. Let me tell you. This morning I worked a station in a Central American country, really a DX seen from the Swedish horizon. And with my simple antenna. To be polite I mailed him a JPG of my eQSL afterwards. He returned promptly: "Sorry. No eQSL please". QRZ.com gave me a clue: the station belonged to the ARRL sister organisation in that island state! No wonder they don't like eQSL.
