Does Your Club Need A Program?

The founder of eQSL.cc, Dave Morris, N5UP, is going "on the road" and may be available to speak at your club meeting!

To be more precise, he can fly into your town in his Mooney airplane, N1960, if you are in the Continental United States. Now, as with every good thing, there are some caveats associated with this offer.

How Small Is Your Town?
It doesn't matter how big or small your town is, there is probably a small airport much closer to your club meeting than the major airports. Also, by flying himself, Dave sets his own schedule and is not a slave to flight attendant strikes and airline schedules. (It also allows him to bring a large jug of coffee instead of being limited to that piddly 3 ounce rule.)

The Bad News
Dave only flies in fair to good weather. The term "fair" is somewhat nebulous, but does not include thunderstorms, heavy rain, really bad visibility, fog, snow, or overcast layers below about 700 feet. Unfortunately here the airlines have somewhat of an advantage if your club is in a part of the country that has frequent rain, fog, snow, hail, sleet, and massive thunderstorms that cannot be circumnavigated. Dave has an "instrument rating" and can fly in light rain and with some low clouds, but he can't push the limits beyond what the FAA allows.

SO... you would be well advised to have a "Plan B", in case the weather turns bad or Dave has mechanical troubles on the day he is supposed to arrive in your town.

PLAN B ideas: We have a PowerPoint presentation that Dave uses during the meetings. You can download that and use it yourself. Dave is also in the process of shooting an entertaining video of the entire presentation that you can run on any laptop computer with an overhead projector, in case we are unable to get into your city on the designated meeting date. AND we may also be able to set up a SKYPE link so that Dave can appear at your meeting in both video and audio form, if you have a high speed Internet link available at the meeting site. These are several of the backup plans available in case the weather turns against us unexpectedly.

What you will get out of the deal
This is going to be a win-win situation. Your club will get an enjoyable presentation on every aspect of the eQSL.cc operation, including its history, goals, and what it can do for each of your club members, as well as for your club station and any contests your club produces. The presentation might draw some new member prospects for your club. You might consider inviting other clubs to attend your meeting, for more opportunities to socialize with local hams. Dave brings along his own laptop computer and overhead projector and only needs you to furnish a screen (or blank wall) and power outlets.

What eQSL.cc will get out of the deal
Because your club members are physically present, we will be able to award each and every one of them the Authenticity Guaranteed status, making their eQSLs instantly valuable for eAwards, without having to upload licenses or wait for an Authentication Code postcard to be mailed. We would also like to set out a donation box where the new members can make a donation to get a Bronze, Silver, or Platinum membership right then and there. We will most likely offer discounts on memberships paid for at the meeting.

What will this cost you?

  • Dave will need someone to pick him up at the airport and chauffeur him around to and from the hotel, club meeting, and back to the airport the next day. Sometimes the airport has a courtesy car available, and there are usually rental cars available, so if transportation is a big problem for you, let's discuss it rather than to get hung up on it.
  • If your meeting is at night, Dave prefers to fly in during the day, make the presentation, and then stay overnight somewhere, and fly out again the next day. If the meeting is in the morning, he prefers to fly in the previous day and stay overnight to appear at the meeting the next morning. He can stay a while after the meeting, for those of your membership who have more questions. This means one hotel night's stay somewhere between your club meeting place and the airport. If you can cover that, excellent. If your club is too small to afford that, let's discuss it rather than to get hung up on it.
  • Dave has to eat, and somehow he has managed to miss very few meals, whether someone else is paying for the meal or not. But if you would like to pay for his dinner, he might even sing for it.

Current preliminary plans shaping up

  • May 2018 - West Texas, NM, AZ, CO
  • Sep 2018 - North Central US, including MO, IL, IN, WI, MI, IA, MN
  • Nov 2018 - Southeastern US, including East Texas, LA, MS, AL, GA, FL, SC

What Next?
Right now, discuss this with your appropriate club officers. You can find a small airport close to your club's meeting location using this small airport lookup screen. Just put in the name of your city and state. You don't really have to look for an airport, because Dave will find one, but if you locate the nearest airport, this would help him get an idea of where your club is located within your city.

Click on the Trip Schedule link below, where you can enter your requested dates. We will then work with you and all the other clubs to construct an itinerary, hopefully allowing Dave to work his way around the area in an orderly fashion, hitting as many clubs as he can. This is not a one-trip deal, but will be an on-going effort over the next few years, so don't feel like you need to schedule it now or lose out altogether!
